Talks
These are designed for one class period, usually 30 - 40 minutes in duration.
Pre-K
Story time! Fun time! I read Look!, do a "call-out" game with colors and shapes,
and then lead a collage-craft activity. Teacher assistance needed. Best for small
groups - one or two classes together.
K-3rd
How do you make your art? Find out with this interactive demonstration. The students
and I discuss where to find information for our artwork, I show them an original
illustration, art materials, and then demonstrate the process of making a collage.
Best for small groups - one or two classes together.
4th-8th
Illustrator, Private Eye Being an illustrator is like being a detective. In this
image-packed presentation, I show them how I do research for my artwork and also
how revision is an important part of any project. Overhead projector and screen required.
Larger groups okay - three or four classes together.

writing and illustration.

Visualize This
For grades 1-8. Using spontaneous creative writing and visual exercises, students
will explore their connection to texts. Then students write and illustrate their
own story based on their observations. Texts can be books the class is studying,
folktales, or poetry. This workshop is a terrific way to help students enter into
reading material on a personal level. Session length and number depend on goals of
school.
Let's Get Creative
For grades K- 5. Two 40-minute sessions. Students learn my technique of blotting
and spattering paper, and then make their own collages based on classroom themes:
nature, science, language arts, etc. Requires the use of an art room and art supplies.
Writer in Residence
For grades K - 5. Capital Region Schools only. I am a huge supporter of Lucy Calkins’
Columbia Writing Workshop, and love working with children to deepen their understanding
of the art of personal narrative writing. Invite me into your classroom throughout
the course of a Writer’s Workshop unit and we will work together to develop concepts
and strengthen students’ writing.
