School Visits

We have a lot of fun in my presentations!

Presentations
When I visit schools, I provide 3 talks per day, each lasting about 45 minutes. With the purchase of 50 books, I offer a free meeting with pre-selected students in addition to the 3 regular talks. Usually a lunch gathering works best.
- In-person fee: $1,500 plus travel expenses.
- Remote fee: $300 for a one-hour presentation. My virtual and in-person talks are similar with lots of interaction and visuals.
I understand bringing an author to your school can seem expensive. You can reduce the overall cost by sharing the travel expenses with other schools, bookstores, libraries and community centers in your area/district. Also, I am a BOCES Arts in Education presenter, so if your school is in NY they can offer financial assistance.
Pre-K
I read Look! or Todah!, and then lead a collage-craft activity. Teacher assistance needed. Best for small groups - one or two classes together.
K-8
Being an illustrator and writer is like being a detective. In this image-packed presentation, I show students how I do research for my artwork and writing, plus how revision is an important part of any project. Overhead projector and screen required. Small or large groups okay.
Klezmer Talks, K-8
If your school would like me to focus specifically on my book about klezmer music, there are a lot of fun things we can do together! I can share the research and revisions that went into the making of the book, and if you want to get creative I love to play klezmer music and have students make art along to its rhythms. Let's talk about what your goals are and how I can personalize my presentations for your students. Please refer to my klezmer page for a few more ideas.

Workshops
Schools who incorporate a hands-on workshop often invite me for two days. They select a few groups to do the workshop with, and then have me do talks for the rest of the student body. Because of differences in how schools plan their workshops with me, it is best contact me to determine my fee.

Here is a 7-minute video of me explaining my workshops to a literacy group in NY. It will give you a good idea of my presentation style and the content of the workshops described below.

Collage Workshop
For grades K- 8. Two 40-minute sessions. Students learn my technique of blotting and spattering paper, and then make their own collages based on classroom themes: nature, science, language arts, etc. The use of an art room is preferred, and art supplies must be supplied by the school. Requires a 2-day visit because of paint-drying time.

Storymaking Workshop
For grades 1-8. Using spontaneous creative writing and visual exercises, students will explore their connection to texts. Students write and illustrate their own story based on their observations. Texts can be books the class is studying, folktales, or poetry. This workshop is a terrific way to help students enter into reading material on a personal level. Session length and number vary.
