Description

Addressing several artistic disciplines, this hands-on creative workshop offers students the opportunity to learn about opera, Mozart, book writing and illustrating as well as paper collage.

Students interact with Kyra as she shares how she used her “mind’s eye” to visualize scenes, settings, and characters for her book , The Magic Flute.

Participants will listen to the story and discuss settings and characters from the story which interest them. Then, students will create their own 3-D piece of artwork out of a cereal box and various collage materials, which depicts their chosen setting and characters.

Materials Required

  • A room with tables able to seat several students together
  • Newspaper covering for table tops
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.
  • Collage materials: ribbon, colored paper, colored tissue paper, glitter, fabric scraps, buttons, foil, etc.
  • Each student needs to bring one large, empty cereal box.

These photos were taken at PS 16 in Troy, NY.

With the assistance of the art teacher, Danielle Weinheimer, the students of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades created amazing works of art using all kinds of collage materials.

We had so much fun - the creativity was flying, and so was the glitter!

Thanks to all of the students at PS 16. That was a great day!
