Workshop Description

This workshop is appropriate for all elementary-age students, from Kindergarten through the upper grades. It is flexible in its content to be as sophisticated or simple as you like.

The first day, we paint papers similar to those that I use in my children’s book illustrations. Students experiment with blotting, spattering, and using different tools in the paint to make textures.

The second day, when the papers are dry, we use them to illustrate a story or concept. We can use  a folktale, a story the children have been working with, or build on a classroom theme or lesson --

whatever would be most strategic in helping students make learning connections.

Painting the papers is so much fun!

This class experimented with making different textures in the paint with forks, lace, cotton balls, shells, straws, and toothbrushes.

Cool!

Now we cut and glue our paper creations...

Look at those beautiful swirly colors!

These Albany kindergartners were in the middle of a unit on fish.

Their wonderful collages showed all they had learned about the different parts of fish and their habitats.

A colorful jellyfish bubbles up from the deep.

The students did a great job sharing papers and getting inspired by the fabulous colors and textures of their classmates’ work.
